Last night we had our 2nd annual poetry slam here at Meadowbrook Middle School. It was success, and everyone enjoyed themselves. We had a wonderful Master of Ceremony/coach, Micheal Guinn with the DFW Slam team that helped inspire the kids about the spoken word. We look forward to our second one for the year in April.

Book Club Coming along nicely
Well today we almost finished the book Lock Down Escape from Furnace. We have one chapter left. It is a good book and the kids are enjoying it. We are not moving on to the sequel because we will start the Mortal Instruments series: City of Bones. We are all excited. The kids have started blogging and made a Prezi and Animoto about the book. We will have our breakfast next Wednesday and kick off our new series and celebrate finishing our first novel. I am very excited about this since I know three or four people that absolutely love this series.
We do need to kick it up a notch and try to read more each day. My students also can take the book for the day and read during their SSR time, but they must bring it back at the end of the day just in case they don't make it back the next morning.

Book Club
This year, I have begun a morning book club. It is going great, and we been reading a book called Lock Down Escape from Furnace by Alexander Gordan Smith. The kids love the book, and it really keeps them interested. They all have made a blog using Blogger (my favorite blog site.) We are all getting into blogging, and it is getting me back to blogging as well. We listen along as it plays on Audible.com. This is a site where you can download books to listen. There is a fee, but the first three months it is only $9.00 or so. If anyone knows of another site where you can get the audio version of a book, please let me know. This one is okay, but I have a hard time getting back to the place we stopped even though I book marked it.

Even though there are sequels to the book. We will take a break from this book and read the Mortal Instruments Series and begin with the first one City of Bones. The students are really looking forward to this one. After each book, we will celebrate with a special breakfast! Come join us at 8:00 every morning Monday through Friday.

Well I haven't been doing good keeping up with my blog, but I promise to do better. The last post I made was last year about our Poetry Slam. It was awesome!! Some great guys from the Fort Worth Slam Team came out and showed us how a Slam should be done. They coached the kids, judged them, and one of the guys was the master of ceremony. We had a great time and the kids loved it. We had almost 20 kids participate in two rounds. There were prizes given and snacks served in the end.
This year our slam will be on November 1, 2012 in conjunction with our "Family Literacy Night." The poetry slam is really catching on and proving to be very popular. It is an intimate event, so we will have it in the cafeteria. The TCU students together with Impossible Possibilities, are having a poetry event at TCU October 27th from 5-8 pm. They will behaving a writing workshop as well as a Slam. Everyone is welcome and it is free. So come on out and see what a slam is all about.

In April, I plan to take on the task of having a Poetry Slam at Meadowbrook Middle School. I hope that it will be successful and be the first of many. I need assistance and advice on how to set one up. I need to know how many judges are needed and all the details of a slam. I am also looking for a guest poet who can perform for us. The event will be in the evening, so that parents can attend. If anyone knows of any sources that can help me with this, please let me know. Also, if you know of any schools or book stores that have successfully implemented a Slam, please can you share.
